Position Summary

The Senior Controls Engineer - Drive Systems is an experienced role with specialized skills needed to design an entire system and manage a project within an industry domain from start to finish with minimal oversight. Systems will involve configuration and design of complex drive systems, typically in the metals industries but also across other web process industries such as converting as well. Controls System Design and programming skills are a key component of the job. Competencies in electrical power design, ability to size transformers, circuit breakers, drives, and other related electrical equipment. Drive design experience is to include low voltage - low and high power AC drive systems, including common DC bus designs, and low and high power DC drive systems. The Senior Controls Engineer will execute a single large project and/or work on multiple smaller projects to a specific timeline and budget. Coordinating and managing other Engineering and Technician resources assigned to project, as well as maintaining excellent client communications throughout the project will be important for success in this role.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Drive System Configuration and Design - Successful configuration and design of complex AC and DC drive systems, typically in the metals industries but across other web process industries such as converting as well. (50% of time will be spent in this area)
  • Proposal Specifications - Work with sales and proposal team to ensure appropriate equipment is purchased to meet the applications specifics. (10% of time will be spent in this area)
  • Hardware Design - Specify and select the key components of a drive system. Work with drafting and panel fabrication team to ensure appropriate panel layout and construction. (10% of time will be spent in this area)
  • Site Commissioning - Assist in the commissioning of the designed drive system(s). (15% of time will be spent in this area)
  • Project Coordination - Coordinates with other control engineers or in some cases will be the primary engineer for PLC programming and HMI requirements for the system. (10% of time will be spent in this area.)
  • Client Interface - Working with clients to ensure successful completion of projects. Resolve on-site issues in a timely and professional manner. (5% of time will be spent in this area)
Requirements:

Must Have:
  • Minimum 4 Year Undergrad Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong drive systems and continuous process control experience, including experience in the application and retrofitting of large variable speed drives.
  • Ability to design, implement, install, and troubleshoot industrial process control systems involving PLC programming and program troubleshooting, PID control loops, analog and digital controls of web process applications.
  • Enjoys working in a fast paced environment with a multi-disciplined Engineering team, and be capable of managing multiple projects at one time.
  • Familiarity with the automation equipment and knowledge of PLC programming for Rockwell Automation/ Allen Bradley ControlLogix family. 
  • Specific competencies in electrical power design for high horsepower drive systems is required. Ability to size transformers, circuit breakers, common bus configurations and high horsepower drives is typical in larger projects.
  • Design experience of electrical systems and power distribution for industrial processes. Familiarity with electrical motors and AC/DC circuits, knowledge of the NEC, commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the Electrical Engineering field. 
  • Experience with data acquisition systems (IBA preferred).
  • An understanding of customer processes: typically rolling mills, hot and cold, casters, cutoffs, levelers, paint lines, metal process lines in both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Solid understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Some experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems, furnaces and/or burners.
  • The ability to effectively communicate recommendations and requirements to the customer.
Would Like:
  • At least 15 years of post graduate industry experience.
  • Experience with current industrial networks and drive field control fieldbusses.
  • Experience with medium voltage AC drives and motors.
  • Experience with legacy drive equipment networks such as GE Salem DC drives and networks (CSF, DLAN, etc.), Reliance dives and networks.
  • Previous experience with an automation systems provider or major vendor.
